Sporting Kansas City Select Dom Dwyer and Cyprian Hedrick In 2012 SuperDraft

Photo

Using picks #16 and #30 Sporting Kansas City selected Dom Dwyer from the University of South Florida and Cyprian Hedrick from Coastal Carolina earlier today in the 2012 SuperDraft that was held right here in Kansas City.

Dom Dwyer, a striker, should provide that extra bit of cover Sporting KC will need on the forward line. Dwyer is 5'9 and has some decent pace on him. The 21 year old recorded a staggering 16 goals in just 21 games for the USF and will look to continue that goal scoring record in KC. A good point Vermes brought up in the video below was that 3/5 of Sporting Kc's forwards are international players and could miss games due to their international teams. Kei Kamara plays with Sierra Leone and, Teal Bunbury and CJ Sapong could also miss Sporting Kc games because of the U.S. So Dwyer can provide that extra cover. He also has a nose for goal and is a good pick up for Sporting Kansas City.

The other pick Sporting Kansas City got was Cameroonian defender Cyprian Hedrick. Hedrick played in and started all of Coastal Carolina's 22 games. Scoring 5 goals in the process. Although Hedrick was not at the convention in person I think he'll be quite happy with Kansas City. He certainly wasn't going to be picked in the 1st round and his depth at CB was desperately needed in Kansas City. Hedrick also spent time playing for Fresno Fuego FC of the PDL in 2009 and appeared in 13 games. Cyprian Hedrick stands at 6'0 and weighs in at 185 pounds and if signed, would definitely be an aerial threat for Sporting KC.

The other interesting thing about both of these picks is that both of them were born in foreign countries. Hedrick was born in Cameroon and Dwyer was born in England. However, only Dwyer would fill up one of Sporting Kc's international roster spots, of which KC has just one left. So I would assume a couple players will be waived and/or sold in the coming weeks. Kenyan defender Lawrence Olum is my pick to leave next.

Does Olum not have a green card?

he has been in the States since 2003 (college) so I would assume he’s close.

I do believe we will see one of our current players moved though.

My best guesses would be Korede, Cyrus, or Olum.

I would guess

that unless he has or is close to a green card, Korede has an uphill road to make the roster. It’s hard to rationalize using an international slot on a 3rd-string fullback.

I would also guess that only two of three of Olum, Cyrus (depending on his loan status), and Hedrick wound up on the roster.

Joe Mauceri who probably watches as much college soccer as anyone isn’t sold on Hedrick.

The other starting senior is Big South defender of the year Cyprian Hedrick. He’s a physical player but not particularly huge. His technical skills are unrefined – but could be classified as scary. I’m not positive that he knows where the ball is going to go on his first touch. His technique is poor. Hedrick is a good leader in the back – given that he’s surrounded by 3 freshmen – this isn’t surprising.

He ranked him the #53 defender with a “D” as “extremely unlikely to make a team”. Interesting but I do think Vermes and his staff have drafted quite well.

Another question

Do players on loan count as an international slot? It isn’t really laid out in the rules.

I believe that they do count as an international slot.

I know that Jeferson counted as one.
