A Quick Look At Sporting Kansas City's Current International Slots
When Sporting Kansas City selected South Florida forward Dom Dwyer and Coastal Carolina defender Cyprian Hedrick in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft, almost immediately I started receiving questions about Sporting's international roster slots, and if Dwyer and Hedrick would count against the seven slots Kansas City currently holds.
Alex touched a bit on this on his post from the other day.
Each team in MLS is allowed 8 international slots every year, but as most of you may recall, Sporting traded one of their 2012 slots to the San Jose Earthquakes in the Bobby Convey acquisition, leaving Kansas City with just seven for the upcoming season. The roster slot traded to San Jose will return to Sporting Kansas City at the end of the 2012 MLS season.
Dwyer will be taking up one of Sporting's international roster spots, but contrary to what a number of people were thinking, Hedrick will not (he was born in Cameroon, but his hometown is listed as Friendswood, Texas).
Here are Sporting Kansas City's current international roster slot players:
Korede Aiyegbusi
Julio Cesar
Aurelien Collin
Daneil Cyrus
Dom Dwyer
Peterson Joseph
Jimmy Nielsen
What makes this all a little more interesting is that we know Peter Vermes and his staff are still actively pursuing potential designated players from various parts of the world that would require an international slot if Sporting were to make a move on them. Vermes confirmed that the club were still actively pursuing such players on the post-draft episode of the MLS Etra-Time podcast, which means there's likely more roster movement on the way for the club in the very near future.
I tend to agree with Alex's thinking that a player like Cyrus, or even Aiyegbusi could very well be on their way out to make room for a potential international player.

Never really was a fan of either player.
I really hope Peterson Joseph gets a chance, though. From what I’ve seen, he looks like he can be a really good player in the future.
Sporting KC will win the 2012 MLS Cup, the Chiefs will win the 2014 Super Bowl, the Royals will win the 2053 World Series.

International players
Kind of hate to see international players dropped without significant time on the field, but PV has proven himself a pretty crafty team builder. Wondering how close the Puma is to green card status…thought that was getting very close last season. And Collin, too? Those are 2 very valuable international spots it would be great to free up, while keeping Sporting’s monster defense intact.
Cyrus was here on loan, right?
I vaguely recall there has been talk of him returning to T&T, so it seems he’s the most obvious candidate to hit the bricks if we need an international slot.
I hope we hold on to Aiyegbusi and Joseph, though, but if push comes to shove, they’re the only other real candidates. Cesar, Collin, Nielsen, and Dwyer obviously aren’t going anywhere.
Follow up to this--
Gooch addresses this very issue in his latest post on the full 90. He suggests that PV may trade for another team’s international slot, but he also hints that Aiyegbusi, Collin, and Nielsen could earn their green cards this year.
I've heard the same about Korede and Jimmy as well.
I’m thinking at least one of them will earn their green card.
