Debate of the Week: The Sporting KC Goal Keeper Edition
Welcome back to the debate of the week. Last week generated some decent poll numbers, and I am looking to continue that trend. One of the comments last week asked of we could debate one last week's example topics, so that's what we will do.
Debate of the week: In the event of a Jimmy Nielsen retirement, do we promote Eric Kronberg to starter, or do we go and find someone else?
Facing the facts, Jimmy Nielsen is 34 years old, and rumors of his retirement have been swirling around for some time. I wouldn't be surprised if he retired after Sporting wins the MLS cup in 2012 (It will happen, there's no disputing).
So the question is, can Kronberg be our starter of the future? The floor is yours.

Hard to say
A known commodity with proven results in MLS games is more palatable than a well-respected guy who performs well in practice and reserve games, but Vermes has the benefit of the doubt from me when evaluating players. If Neilsen plays to the end of his contract Kronberg will be pushing 30. Although that’s a warning sign for many players it’s when many keepers do their best work.
I voted for Kronberg.

Yeah, I don't think age is much a factor for keepers these days
Kasey Keller was still drawing accolades last year, in his age 41 season. Brad Friedel is a starter in the EPL at age 40. Same for Eddie Van der Sar at Man U before he retired.
I realize this is hypothetical
—Jimmy signed a contract extension this offseason, so I’m guessing he thinks he still has at least two years left in the tank.
That said, I think Kronberg has paid his dues and has risen to the occasion whenever he has been asked to play, as infrequent as it has been. I think it should be his job to lose, so I voted for him too.
Remember away at LA.
I know it was just one game, but I think Kempin should take over.
Sporting KC will win the 2012 MLS Cup, the Chiefs will win the 2014 Super Bowl, the Royals will win the 2053 World Series.
