More serious commentary after the jump. The Timmy Chandler Conundrum
U.S. Head Coach Jurgen Klinsmann Discusses the Initial 16-Player Training Camp Roster - U.S. Soccer
On the exclusion of Timmy Chandler from the roster: "I have had long conversations with Timmy about where he is in his professional career and his commitment to playing international football. He has expressed his appreciation for all the opportunities we have given him, but he also feels at this point he needs to take a break. It’s disappointing not having him as a part of the team at this important juncture of building our team, but ultimately a player must decide what is best for him. The door is certainly not closed on Timmy, but in the moment we move on without him."
See what happens when you write a depth chart for the USMNT, someone goes and screws it all up. Then again, I did list him as my number three choice at RB and my number one is in camp. I wish he would commit to the United States but I can see why he wouldn't. Germany is obviously more prestigious and for all of the young attacking talent they have, their defense is both aging and at times just bad, rather shielded by their offense than the pragmatic force of yesteryear.
I am going to go out on a limb and say of all the German-Americans players, Chandler is the one the United States can most afford to lose. The roster still has four of the sixteen players being of the same circumstance. If this were Fabian Johnson, I may have thrown something like a chair or a TV.
Joe Corona, Awesome Name, Enigmatic Choice
Everyone else on here is a Klinsmann veteran. Corona and Castillo each had a solid year at Club Tijuana, not exactly Mexico's most distinguished club. Whereas Castillo has shown us nothing internationally, except that one time my friend showed me a picture of him and Keith Sweat that he texted her, Corona gets his first chance here. I'm not sure if he will be in the final 23, much less the 18 man on game-days, but there is no harm in getting a young player some training with the National team.
The Final 13
These are my nine choices that feel are obvious.
I not sure about Lichaj and Gomez, but the rest have been called in before by Klinsmann and are either favorites or in great form.
As for the last four, MLS hot hands may appear, such as Chris Pontius. Or center back hopefuls like Geoff Cameron. Simply, I could make a 23 man roster easily, but 29 seems unwieldy and prospective. As we get more into depth charts, you'll see Klinsmann and I don't agree much, though my opinion matters little.
